The Kornati archipelago, which is the part of the municipality of Murter consists of 150 islands, islets and reefs. A vast concentration of islands on a small space makes it one of the most indented group of islands in the Mediterranean. It was proclaimed the national park in the year 1980.
The Kornati Islands area occupies about 62 km2, and the whole area of the National Park Kornati about 300 km2.
The most remarkable natural attraction of the National Park Kornati are the cliffs on the islands facing the open sea, whose continuations in the sea reach the depth up to 100 metres. Flora and fauna of the Kornati archipelago consist of 346 species and 295 under species that succeeded to survive in this well preserved aquatorium.
